HEE.
I'm almost out of schoooool~
Just one more exam to take, and I'm done! Damn EOC's... blocking my exemptions...
Ahem.
Anyway, this is some of the first fanart I've done in a while, and I've apparently improved a lot since then. D:

It's Konata from the anime series "Lucky Star". It's one of my favorites, and I have no idea why the hell it is. Lucky Star really seems like a shoujo, and yet... I don't know any girls that watch it. In fact, everyone I know who likes it is a guy. It's really confusing...
The series does a great job of making parodies of other animes from Sgt. Frog to Code Geass to Initial D to Yu-Gi-Oh to whatever else you can think of. It's really ingenious.
But anyway, this is Konata, the kind-of protagonist. She's such a nerd, incredibly lazy yet athletic, short, and plays MMOs when she should be doing homework. I may draw some of the other characters later.

I started drawing this to:
1- try out some new graphic techniques I thought of
2- add to my manga/anime inventory so I can sell stuff at Animazement next year
3- express my lame-ass fandom that only shines through every once in a while

I vectorized the outline, and colored using brush tool with approxamately 10-20% opacity.

So there you have it. I did this over the last three nights when I should have been working on a couple US History projects. I guess you can call that "getting into the spirit of the character". Yeah, that sounds like a good enough excuse.

:gallery: I was just looking around the newest submissions here on DA and your artwork piece caught my eye! :o I gotta say I am floored by your use of color in this! :faint: I really like the character design you made and I think the shading you did is spot on! Nice work my friend!

Thank you much!
I'm glad you think the color use is good. I'm really trying to improve in that area, since I usually only use browns. XD
My friends have been trying to make me use "prettier" colors or whatever. >.>

But thanks again! Your enthusiasm nearly bowled me over, lol. ^^

hehe...Well thats why we are here on DA right? TO meet fellow artists, make friends, get better at doing what we love. I have never been the type to swing on by, say, "nice work," and leave. To me, when it comes to art, honesty truly is the best policy! :highfive: And you did an amazing job on this piece...nothing I could have said to make it better. :D And no worries about color...I too am trying to make the transition from traditional artist to digital. In fact I JUST finished my first try at digital painting...my god...hehe :faint: Anyways, I'll have to take a moment too look at the rest of your gallery!

great shading on the hair!
it's funny, there are loads of anime/manga that appeal more to non-target audiences... I'm a girl, and I definitely prefer seinen or shounen to shoujo manga, with anime I'm a little more flexible. is lucky star kind of like excel saga?
:iconpaimonerra:
OMFG.
LUCKY STAR.
I honestly couldn't watch more than an episode. It was fucking hilarious for six minutes! But then I was leik, "Dude. How much can they say about the proper way to eat food before I want to shoot myself because it's OVERKILL?"
Twelves minutes.

Anyways, sweet job! I like the plant/wuteva? crap to the right. It's my favorite part. I... don't know why. T.T
:iconevoblade:
Haha, thanks. XD
I just used like... 4 layers for this background, and that's it.
First, I put down a fill layer of the light orange. That's it for that, movin' on. :]
For the second layer, I made a black and white gradient over the whole thing, and set the layer to Multiply. Then I used Filter>Sketch>Halftone Pattern with the dominant color as dark orange to create the dots.
Third, I made the rays with pen tool, set the layer to Multiply, and made a gradient overlay with the darker orange and reversed it.
For the final layer, I just used splatter brushes and some improv brushwork.

I know I probably didn't have to type all that.
Ummm, I was bored. DX

Thanks!
Excel Saga is considered more of a Seinen manga/anime and it does deal with a lot of similar issues that Lucky Star does, parodying Japanese culture and stuff. But I think the thing that disinguishes them is that ES seems more action-based like a typical Shonen or Seinen, whereas LS is just a slice-of-life type thing. Like, just hearing about the subject matter, it doesn't seem like it'd be interesting at all! But really... it's a confusing genre. I just checked wikipedia, and it's considered a shonen there... >.>
