FINALLY.
I wanted to paint a beetle since ~Mayfire44 mentioned iridescent beetle wings in a comment on my "Forevermore" pic. This thing: [link] While I was in the emergency room last Tuesday for a mystery virus which got my temperature up to a blazing 104.6, I planned out ideas for this picture in my head. Which wasn't really much to think about... it IS a beetle. And that's about it. So I did the lineart, and planned on painting it whenever I got the chance. Consequently, I've been watching the lineart for this staring up at me from my room floor for the past week. It's been whispering, "COLOR ME. COLOR MEEEEEEE." So today since I didn't go to work, I cut loose and colored the bastard. Take THAT, laziness! However, with all the planning involved, this thing turned out much worse than I expected. I think I used too much india ink. It made the colors poopy. :\ Given, it was very fun to do. I listened to the entirety of three CDs while painting: The Flashbulb's "Resent and the April Sunshine Shed", Beck's "Odelay", and Thrice's "Alchemy Index Vol. III- Air". My soundtrack made me splatter the crap out of everything without regards to composition, lol. I really don't care. c: This beetle is a hybrid of the Colorado potato beetle, the Atlas beetle, and a couple things I BS'd. P: Also, let it be known that my scanner eats bright colors. That white-ish area near the bottom? That's actually lime green. The red near the top is vibrant orange. Scanner fail. Sorry guys. :\ ....and I'll stop now. Any feedback is welcome. ^_^ -- 9"x12" Strathmore watercolor paper watercolor, india ink, rollerball pen ~7 or 8 hours -- ©=evoblade Comments
I wish I knew what color it ACTUALLY was. You shall have to show me if I am in your neighborhood, which seems likely and slightly inevitable. Woo.
Uhm... For having no regard for the composition, I think it turned out pretty swimmingly. It looks like something you would do, definitely. I really don't know what else to say, so... *bother* OH HO HO HO HO
"I think I used too much india ink. It made the colors poopy. :\" AH FU FU FU FUFUFUFUFUFU~ Didn't hear ya complainin' about that before. Anyway, it's far less poopy than some of your previous stuff, so I don't see the problem. You've come a mighty long way with colors since just a couple years ago. I think it looks fantastic. And, er. You were in the emergency room? Joo was sick? Mmmmmmn. ;n; Well, I hope you're better now. Just don't give us all swine flu, mmkay? GRAAAAH. You used that against me. No faiiiir. :c
This looks a butt-ton less poopy in person. There is soooo much green in the original. I'm surprised at how little green actually showed up. Bleh. Yeah. It seems as though I had a case of West Nile Fever, lol. Lame ass mosquitoes... Anyway, thanks for the concern. c: I'm feeling 100% better now. -- "We're gonna make some big decisions in our little world." -Bob Ross Nooo!! Then I'm dying to see the original!
Stupid scanner... Anyway, the tetures of the wings look great, and I like all those details on its shell :> (Or, is it called shell?) Yuss, very nice pic! But as you said, a tad too much of the ink ;> -- I'm the Brickface. I do commissions! Prices starting from 5! Help a Noss avoid Livin' on the Street! Thrice is awesome...I have yet to purchase Air and Earth.
But yeah I think it's great...your work with the colors and inks are amazing...it probably only seems poopy to you due to the line work you lost in the darker, bolder shades...but so what! It has such an awesome energy to it, like something you'd see in Shibuya or on some building or object that's super stylish and awe inspiring...like a comic book! Or the hull of some awesome ship...hehe. It's very alive, and that's what makes Art Art!
